Antalya in ancient times

Antalya was according to ancient tradition in 159 or 158 BC. Founded by King Attalus II of Pergamon. After him, she received the name Attaleia. From 133 BC His empire came to the Roman Empire by inheritance, but Pamphylia fell into a multitude of dominions that turned to piracy. This became only 67 v. Chr. Finished by Pompey. As the most important port of the wider area it was in the 1st century AD, presumably around the year 48 AD, travel station of the biblical apostle Paul. However, a church, the present mosque Kesik Minare Camii, can only be documented from the 5th century. In the Middle Ages Antalya was often called Satalia in western sources, but in Greek sources Attaleia continues. In Byzantine times, Antalya was an important Christian center and a major naval base. In order to be able to resist Arab attacks, the city, which had walls since Roman times, was rebuilt in the 8th century. In 860 an Arab army conquered the city when raids were carried out from Melitene and Tarsus. In the 11th century, the city became the seat of an Orthodox bishop. During the Crusades, the city was often a stopover, 1149 crusaders fled here. In 1085, the Turkish Seljuk Turks succeeded in conquering the city, which became Byzantine again in 1121 and 1137-42, respectively. The city came under Ottoman rule in the late 14th century, then finally in 1426, but never reached the status of a rural town until the mid-20th century. This was connected with the shifting of trade routes to the Mediterranean, while the caravans barely touched the city.

Antalya in the present

Today's Antalya - capital of the province of the same name, about half of whose inhabitants live in the city of Antalya, impresses with its diversity: on the one hand the modern, urban city life with shops, restaurants and in-locations. On the other side, there are plenty of historical sites, museums, mosques and a charming old town, with winding paths and alleys around every corner. Whichever one decides: who has once known the city and its surroundings a little closer, will agree:

Antalya is a "paradise on earth" - as the founder king Attalos II once described the region.
